Affordability and Accessibility: FCS Financial Aid

Choosing a private Christian education for your child is a meaningful investment. At Fredericksburg Christian School, we believe that a Christ-centered education should be within reach for families across our community, not only for those with the highest incomes. That conviction shapes everything about how we approach tuition, financial aid, and the partnership we build with each family we serve.

If cost has ever made you hesitate to explore a Christian school for your child, this guide is for you. We want to walk you through the value of an FCS education, explain what tuition covers, and detail the financial aid options that make an FCS education more affordable and accessible than many families expect.

The Value of a Christian Education

At its heart, a Fredericksburg Christian School education is about far more than academics. We are an evangelical, non-denominational school dedicated to a strong academic program with Christian character and Biblical truth woven into every subject, so that students graduate with a lifelong Biblical worldview. Our purpose is simple: to glorify God by educating with excellence.

When you invest in a Christian education, you are investing in the whole child. You are choosing an environment where teachers pray with students, model Christ-like character daily, and view every lesson as an opportunity to point young people toward truth. That kind of formation reaches beyond the classroom and into the way your child understands their identity, their responsibilities, and their future.

Academic Excellence With Eternal Purpose

That mission produces real, measurable results. More than 95% of our graduates go on to college, and our students consistently score above the national average on the SAT. We offer thirteen Advanced Placement courses and encourage students to challenge themselves academically while growing spiritually. In 2022 alone, our graduates earned $1.1 million in college scholarships, a testament to how well an FCS education prepares students for what comes next.

Small class sizes make this possible. With an average of 18 to 20 students per class, our teachers have the opportunity to mentor every child individually. Many of our faculty hold advanced degrees, and their average tenure is seven years, reflecting a stable, invested community of educators who represent sixty-eight different churches across the region.

When you weigh the cost of tuition, it helps to consider the full value you receive: rigorous academics, faith integration in every subject, a full-time safety and security officer, robust fine arts and athletics programs, dedicated college and career guidance, and a community of families who share your values. You can learn more about what makes our approach distinctive on The FCS Difference page.

Understanding Tuition and What It Covers

Transparency matters to us. Two of our four core values are servant leadership and integrity and transparency, and we carry those values into every conversation about cost. Families deserve a clear picture of what they are paying for and why, and we are committed to providing exactly that.

Rather than list figures that change from year to year, we keep current tuition rates posted on our tuition page, where you will always find the most up-to-date information for each grade level. Keeping this information current and public is one small way we honor our commitment to open, honest communication with the families we serve.

Tuition at FCS supports the entire educational experience, including:

  1. Experienced mentor teachers, many with advanced degrees
  2. Small class sizes that allow individualized attention
  3. Technology integrated throughout the classroom
  4. A full-time safety and security officer and a safe, secure campus
  5. Fine arts, athletics, and enrichment opportunities
  6. College and career guidance from dedicated counselors
  7. The daily operation of two campuses for our Lower and Upper schools

To help families plan ahead, we also offer an online tuition calculator through our admissions pages that lets you estimate your potential investment before you begin the formal process. It is a helpful first step in seeing how an FCS education could fit within your family’s budget.

Financial Aid Options at FCS

We understand that even a clear tuition figure can feel daunting. That is exactly why FCS has built several pathways to make Christian education more affordable. Financial aid is not an afterthought at our school; it is central to our mission of serving families across the greater Fredericksburg region.

Variable Tuition: Need-Based Financial Aid

The purpose of our Variable Tuition program is to make Christian education accessible to more families by providing a reduced rate based on each family’s specific financial situation. It is a need-based financial aid structure similar to those used by other private schools, colleges, and universities. Any family with children in kindergarten or above who needs assistance may apply.

To keep the process fair and objective, factors such as income, family circumstances, and the cost of living in the Fredericksburg region are reviewed by a third party, FACTS Grant & Aid. Each request is then reviewed by the FCS Financial Aid Committee, which makes the final award decision. The committee reads every family’s letter individually, because numbers alone do not always tell the full story.

The impact is significant. Currently, 71% of FCS students receive reduced tuition through Variable Tuition or one of our other discounts. In other words, affordability is not the exception at FCS. For the majority of our families, it is the norm.

Additional Tuition Discounts

Beyond need-based aid, FCS offers several discounts that can further reduce your tuition:

  • Multiple-child discount for families enrolling more than one student
  • Advanced-pay discount for families who pay tuition ahead of schedule
  • Alumni discount for families connected to our graduate community
  • Employee discount for families of FCS staff members

These discounts can be considered alongside Variable Tuition, helping families combine savings wherever they qualify.

The Children’s Tuition Fund

When you apply for Variable Tuition, your application is also evaluated for eligibility through the Children’s Tuition Fund, a program that provides another source of assistance for qualifying Virginia families. This means a single application opens the door to more than one potential form of support, with no extra steps required on your part.

How to Apply for Variable Tuition

Applying is more straightforward than many families expect. Here is how the process works:

  1. Complete the school entrance application and enrollment packet for the upcoming year. This must be finished before Variable Tuition assistance can be considered.
  2. Gather your supporting documents, including your most recent completed federal tax return with all supporting schedules, W-2 forms for everyone listed on the return, and documentation for any Social Security income or child support.
  3. Write a letter to the Variable Tuition Review Committee describing your financial circumstances and the monthly amount you feel your family can pay. This letter is one of the most important parts of your application.
  4. Submit your application through the FACTS Grant & Aid website, along with the required processing fee.

FCS asks that families with an adjusted gross income of $175,000 or less apply for Variable Tuition, though an income below that figure does not guarantee an award. The committee reviews each family’s full circumstances individually and prayerfully.

Timing matters, too. Variable Tuition awards are processed on a rolling schedule, with earlier application completion dates leading to earlier notification letters. Families who apply by the earlier deadlines in the spring receive their award notifications first, so we encourage you not to wait. You can begin the process or ask questions anytime through our admissions team.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is eligible to apply for Variable Tuition?

Any family with children in kindergarten or above who needs financial assistance may apply. FCS asks that families with an adjusted gross income of $175,000 or less on their most recent tax return apply, though income alone does not determine an award.

How much financial aid could my family receive?

Awards are determined case by case based on your family’s specific financial situation, so there is no set amount. FACTS Grant & Aid and the FCS Financial Aid Committee review income, expenses, and family circumstances together to arrive at a fair reduced rate.

Where can I find current tuition rates?

Current rates for every grade level are posted on our tuition page, and our online tuition calculator can help you estimate your family’s potential investment before you apply.

Can I combine financial aid with other discounts?

Yes. Variable Tuition can be considered alongside our multiple-child, advanced-pay, alumni, and employee discounts, allowing eligible families to maximize their savings.

When should I apply?

Because awards are processed on a rolling basis, earlier applications receive earlier notification. We recommend completing your application as early in the spring as possible so you have your award decision in hand while planning for the year ahead.
