The music program at Fredericksburg Christian School places an emphasis on musicianship and camaraderie. Each student will obtain a basic knowledge of music history and music theory, in addition to technical and expressive skill in vocal range or on their instrument of choice. Students also have the opportunity to develop skills in tone production, sight reading, ear training, creative expression, evaluation, performance, and group dynamics while studying under highly qualified teachers.
Students who are involved in music at FCS perform a wide variety of classical, traditional, jazz, popular, patriotic and sacred works to provide for both a broad musical exposure and many avenues for music ministry. A Biblical foundation for music is explored through discussion and application of Bible verses and character studies related to Biblical truth.
Lower School Music
Beginning in Kindergarten, Lower School students have the opportunity to attend Music once per week in addition to the times of worship they have regularly in their classrooms and during Chapel.
In Music, students explore beginning concepts in rhythm, melody, form and expression. They are introduced to a variety of beginning musical instruments such as the glockenspiel and recorder, learn about famous composers, are taught the basics of reading, writing, and analyzing simple melodies, and have multiple opportunities to perform throughout the year.
As young musicians, students at FCS will build vocal technique, express their gifts, and recognize how to use music for God’s glory.
Choir & Worship
At the upper school level, students have multiple opportunities to participate in vocal music. Choir is offered for students in Grades 5-12. Classes focus on vocal technique, musical literacy, and spiritual excellence. Each semester culminates in a concert, displaying both full ensemble pieces and smaller group performances. The overall program goal is to create a supportive environment where each student can grow personally, musically, and spiritually.
Worship classes are also offered for both Middle and High School students, and correspond to our worship teams for Chapel services. While the class is comprised of exceptional musicians, the main goal is to foster spiritual growth to prepare these students to enter the real world as Biblically-strong and theologically-driven worship leaders. This class also teaches how to thoughtfully design each aspect of a corporate worship gathering in light of Scripture, for the glory of God and the good of His people
Band
Students from 5th grade and above may elect to participate in band, choosing a woodwind, brass, or percussion instrument of interest. Band is designed to help students develop proper instrumental techniques and sight-reading skills. Through the course of the years, students will study music from all time periods, learn various musical styles, and perform as a band, small ensembles, and soloist. Styles and genres of music to be performed include Christian, Classical, Baroque, jazz, contemporary band, folk, and swing. To showcase their talents, students are invited to participate in events such as our Christmas Concert, Spring Concert, District Assessment, and Spring Festival.
Orchestra
Through Orchestra, students 5th grade and above electing this Fine Art offering may choose from string instruments like the violin, viola, cello, or double bass. The orchestra program focuses on developing strong playing techniques and collaborative skills. Students will delve into a wide array of music from various periods, exploring different styles and performing as a full ensemble, in chamber groups, and as soloists. Musical genres will include Classical, Romantic, Baroque, contemporary, folk, and popular music. To highlight their progress, students are encouraged to take part in events such as our Christmas Concert, Spring Showcase, District Music Festival, and local community performances.
Enduring Freedom Honor Team
The Enduring Freedom Honor Team consists of multi-talented Fredericksburg Christian High School musicians who perform patriotic tunes and period music, dressed in vintage World War II khaki and Eisenhower short jacket ensembles with authentic insignia and badges as well as original visor caps. This group performs at special events throughout the area, and has even performed for United States Armed Forces oversees.
Ministry Choir
Ministry Choir is a new musical group this year! Each Wednesday and Thursday at lunch, this elective group meets to rehearse together. It is comprised primarily of singers, but also includes a handful of instrumentalists. Once a month, Ministry Choir performs somewhere in the community and serves alongside an outside ministry, charity, or organization. This group is a great way for students to both earn Christian service hours and learn how to practically be the hands and feet of Jesus through serving those outside the school.
