40 Stories for 40 Years – Superintendent, Rick Yost

While he was born at Naval Air Station Jacksonville in Florida, Mr. Yost’s family moved to upstate New York when he was seven. Answering God’s call to serve as missionaries in Brazil, his parents made the move to attend seminary. The family crammed all four kids into a small car and loaded a 4’x 6’ Uhaul with only some clothes (no coats or winter clothes at all) and four pieces of furniture and headed to Binghamton, NY where they didn’t even have a place to live. Needless to say, these were humble beginnings, but served as important building blocks of faith and character.

Health issues caused Mr. Yost’s parents to hit pause on missionary plans, so they went to work at IBM and were very soon afterward transferred to Virginia where Mr. Yost entered his senior year at Stonewall Jackson High School in Manassas. After graduation, he went to Viriginia Tech, where he received a bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a Business minor. The next 22 years were spent in corporate management with Leggett Department Stores (now Belk). It was at the corporate office in Danville, VA that he met his wife Sherry, a fashion buyer for the same company. They were married in 1982 and were eventually transferred to Fredericksburg where their two children, Sarah Beth and Drew, were enrolled at FCS. Sherry also began teaching kindergarten at FCS at that time.

In 1997, Gary Foss was searching for an Assistant Superintendent. Providentially, the Lord had been working in the Yosts’ lives, preparing them to answer the Fosses’ call. In the intervening years, Mr. Yost sat under the tutelage of the Fosses and earned a Masters in Education from Regent University. He became Superintendent of FCS in 2004. He says that every mile, every inch of the journey has been a blessing, as his love for FCS and for the Lord has grown every year. Mr. and Mrs. Yost live in Woodford, VA and have five grandchildren and one great grandchild. Three of their grandchildren attend FCS.

We are so grateful to have the Yosts at FCS!
