How To Get Involved – Club Opportunities at the Upper School

Club Opportunities
Author: Savannah Webb

FCS has a LOT to offer students when it comes to extracurricular activities, which provide AMAZING opportunities for students. This blog post is going to break down the who, the what, and the when of clubs. Even though we’re a month into school, it isn’t too late to join. Get out there, and get involved!

Student Council: Mrs. Saylor & Mrs. Tyson (Advisors)

  • President: Madison L.
  • VP: Luke S.

Student Council is in charge of planning fall and winter spirit weeks, including pep rally games and dress up themes. They also prepare for and organize the Winter Homecoming ceremony, which means members get to miss a day of school to decorate the gym. Not that any of you would be interested in that, of course…

Leadership Team: Mr. Gideon & Mrs. Soriano (Advisors)

  • President: Henry H.
  • VP: Brenna B.

If you are at all interested in learning about what leadership is, or are eager to help others through service, come to a Leadership Team meeting! Members participate in an array of events ranging from the ACSI Leadership conference that takes place in November to running 5th grade day. They are even planning to launch student morning news announcements this year. There’s something for everyone in this club, so come check it out!

Pro-Life Club: Ms. Cecil (Advisor)

  • President: Rachel S.
  • VP: Catherine S.

Pro-Life is probably one of FCS’ busiest clubs. Each year, club members attend the March for Life in DC, participate in the Choices Fundraiser Walk in downtown Fredericksburg, organize the baby bottle fundraiser for Choices Women’s Center, and have a T-shirt fundraiser to benefit Choices. The club is always open to anyone who would like to learn about what it means to be pro life. They are not just against abortion. They support protecting and honoring the dignity of all people, no matter their age, intellectual capacity, or any other demographic.

Literary Club: Mrs. Sizemore (Advisor)

The Literary Club publishes an annual journal of student works.  The club is currently comprised of Mrs. Sizemore’s Creative Writing class, but Mrs. Sizemore is always looking for new members who are self-motivated and have a real interest in being active in the club.

Yearbook: Mrs. Hvizdak (Advisor)

  • Senior Editor: Savannah W.
  • Managing Editor: Emma J.

While Yearbook isn’t a high school club, it is a class that happens to meet during lunch on Mondays. If you’re interested in journalism, photography, or advertising, you should definitely consider checking it out! Yearbook class is 4th & 7th period, so lunch meetings are every 1st and 3rd Monday of the month to bring the two classes together and sort ideas.

National Honors Society: Mrs. Williams (Advisor)

  • President: Savannah W.

NHS is slightly different from other clubs at FCS in the sense that not everybody is eligible to join. According to the newest requirements, candidates must have attended FCS for at least 1 semester (Freshmen and Transfer students are not eligible) and have a 4.2 cumulative GPA. Once nominated, they must be approved by a council of teachers and approved by Dean Roper. Candidates that meet the requirements receive an invitation to join, along with information about the club and induction ceremony. NHS is responsible for organizing the annual Christmas banquet, and this year, members are giving back to the community through a plethora of service opportunities.
